William Wyon RA, the official Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint from 1828 until his death in 1851, was considered one of the greatest engravers in the history of British coinage.
Among Wyon’s astonishing output, Una and the lion five-pound coin is undoubtedly a numismatic and artistic masterpiece; it was remastered in 2019 Q4 as the first series of the Royal Mint’s Great Engravers collection, the whole range of proof coins was sold out within minutes of its launch.
In 2020 Q4, the Royal Mint released a second series of the Great Engravers collection with the work of William Wyon again – The Three Graces. Only about 50 pattern coins with the design were ever struck funded by himself, and none of them entered circulation.
